Yes, there are similarities to the one I made for Isabella, but this one uses a slightly different pattern - one I designed myself.

No, really. I do love shoes. Every outfit I have should have a pair of matching shoes. Most of them don't, of course, but they should. And one day, I'll be able to afford to have shoes made for me that exactly match everything. So when I came across UpperStreet.com, I squealed in delight. Okay, I didn't quite squeal. But I am delighted. So I decided to play.

Only problem is the price, though for completely custom shoes, I suppose one can justify $345. I just can't justify it today :/

Home made laundry detergent

For those of you who don't know, I have some allergies to all sorts of thing - commercial laundry detergent being top of the list. I had been buying hand crafted laundry soap from the lovely Jodi of Heart J Creations, but after I bought 3 pounds for the shipping price of 1 pound and had it stopped by quarantine because it smelt like fruit (coconut mango scent) and then it got slashed open (likely because it's white powder...) I decided to start making my own.
So, I looked around for a recipe and found Julie of Towards Sustainability.

Just so we're all clear, this is Julie's recipe, not mine. I need you to understand that all I have done is add some scent to it (2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste and 2 teaspoons of coconut essence).

I started with grating 1 bar of generic brand pure soap (did you know that that stuff is actually scented? I did. I had to learn all of this stuff when Ducky was put on an elimination diet). 1 bar makes around 2 cups of grated soap.
I then added 2 cups of nappy soak, 2 cups of Borax and 2 cups of laundry crystals.
I've now washed 2 loads of laundry (using 1 heaped tablespoon per load) and it's coming up unbelievably clean.
I'll be making it again, and adding more scent - it doesn't seem to have much in the way of aroma to it - to help cover up the gods awful smell that kids clothes and hubby's work clothes get.

My 14 year old boy, Mouse, is kinda obsessed with patterns. He's also almost a maths geek - I'm working on making him more so. And since he's always cold in winter (yes, I may be in Australia, but this town gets bloody freezing) I figured I'd make him a mathematics based scarf.
I present to you, The Fibonacci Scarf.

Then I finished off by single stitching into each stitch.

For this one, I used 3 different yarns, each 8ply. I used two together (red, yellow and blue yarns, combined into red and yellow, blue and yellow and blue and red), alternating the three. My hook is a lovely electric blue aluminium hook in size 6.0mm.

A note on my crochet, by the way. I'm in Australia, and as much as I can read and use both US and UK patterns, I write mine in UK terminology.

Also, I'll be updating on a new "recipe" I tried today. It will on this blog instead of The Balloon Whisk because it isn't food. I'm trialling it at the moment, so will let you know how it went after I'm done.

A type writer...

For those of you who've either just started reading or those who've been reading, but live under a rock, I'm kind of obsessed with typography. And for this reason, I love the following poster :

And then I came across this typewriter. I'm vaguely curious to know what it would look like if I typed up a beautiful poem, like Desiderata. Then, I'm also curious to know what would happen if I typed out a non English poem, then typed up the English translation. Would they appear the same? (And there's the part of me that's interested in linguistics...)

A note on netiquette...

Netiquette is a very peculiar thing - as far as behaviour goes, we haven't really developed correct etiquette for internet use, blogging etc. Having said that, there's something we should all be aware of.

Credit where credit is due, peoples. This is particularly important in design blogs.
Tonight, I was reading a design blog, and came across a photo which was credited incorrectly. I know it was credited incorrectly because I know where the photo was taken.

I have since messaged the owner of the area photographed, and also contacted the blogger with said owners details (blog name to be precise).
Yes, the blogger credited it, but she credited it to a design and style magazine. That's fine if you didn't also know that the article credited the designer (the person who owns the view).

Summer crochet projects

It defies logic, I know, but I've been making scarves. I've based two of them on Laughing Purple Goldfish' curlicue scarf pattern, but changed them to my liking (I've done groups of *4 trebles then 2 trebles, then one treble* into a stitch), and used two colours. This is Chookie wearing hers on Boxing Day

She may have been eating at the time - something that is quite likely!

I'm also working on a "Fibonacci" scarf for Mouse, and a two tone blue curly scarf for Goose. Ducky doesn't know what she wants yet. More photos will be forthcoming.

Knot boards

Since my days as a Scout Leader, I've been fascinated with knot boards. The examples of excellent ropework fascinate me, and some are more technically difficult than others. You can tell how talented a person is with ropework by the knots on the board.
And so, today when I came across a knot board on Facebook, I had to share it.

This one is from the Scouting and Guiding Federation of Turkey, and actually made by Cengiz Yılmaz.
For all of my former Scouts who read this, I hope you can tie at least half of these and name most of them.

Christmas decorating...

I seem to feel stupidly inspired around this time of year, and while I have an urge to use the fireplace as a focal point (aside from the ~~garishly~~ personalised-by-children decorated tree) it's been stupidly cold here (it's summer!) and the heater is in front of it. If I can manage to get the heater put away before Christmas day I'll probably end up filling the fireplace with left over Christmas baubles.
Meanwhile, as a focal point for the table, I'll be filling a lovely straight edge Maxwell Williams vase (which I discovered at a home gifts store here in town for less than $20) with the small gold and silver baubles we have. I tried putting oranges into the vase, but the tennis ball size oranges don't fit very well into the vase, so it will have to be the small (maximum of 3 cm diameter) baubles it will have to be.

Meanwhile, the wreath is on the door, the 150cm tree is up (though the star keeps falling off), and I am still not at all prepared - though I'm halfway through paying off the meat order.
And there's not even 3 weeks to go!

My latest obsession is crochet.
I've (this year) made 3 scarf hoods (scoodies), 2 berets, started on a ripple for my daughter, Margaret (better known as Babette, which brings me to the next project for Margaret), 2 scarves (one in simple UK trebles/US DC, the other is alternating rows of trebles and fans), and now I'm teaching myself how to crochet hexagons, so I can make a blanket for Katharine (better known as Goose).
When I've got the babette and hexagon blanket done, I'll have to make either an equalizer blanket or Super Mario blanket for Michael (... he doesn't really have a nickname, but let's call him Mouse, yes?), a "stained glass" blanket for myself and the Infoxicated Man, using African flowers (I'm thinking a "dazzle"/variegated yarn for the centre, the single thin line in black, and the surrounding 2 rounds in white), and then work out what to do for Isabella (better known as Chook).

*Sigh* I may even get it all done before Christmas.

Painting... Kitchen and household stuffs

So, I made the mistake of looking at my friends blog.
Viv from Ish & Chi is one of my oldest friends - we went to high school together, so we've known each other for around 20 years.
Thing is, though, as much as her house inspires me, and as much as I'd love to do simple things to it, my landlady would never permit it.
So, I'm stuck doing simple things.
My question today, readers, is what to do here...
I have a lovely black and silver shiney coffee machine from The Blue Pod Company - and I picked black because I figured white just wouldn't work in the kitchen. Here it is in its little corner...

Now, you can't quite see it, but that's an old passionfruit pulp tin that the frothing wand is soaking in.

I want to remove the label and paint the outside, but a at a loss to what colour... Suggestions?

And while we're looking at photos and thinking of painting... I still have to paint my first aid kit.

He did a lot of still lifes, focusing on the form of the subject, and not just the subject itself.

The Christmas Wreath

So, we finally have a lovely old fashioned house, where we can actually have a Christmas wreath on the front door.

And yanno, I love this. I just don't like ~~any~~ almost all of the wreaths I've seen so far.

And since we use a different colour each year (we didn't last year, because we were at That Woman's house, so were stuck with her decorations), I wanted to make a wreath in the colours we are using.

And then I thought about it, and figured I could make on in almost all colours, and then use it year after year after year.

So, I thought of what I wanted. Instead, I ended up listing what I don't want.

I don't want an evergreen wreath.
I don't want a shopping bag wreath.
I don't want something that will date too easily.
I don't want something boring.

So, I figure I'll make a Christmas bauble wreath. It looks easy, the kids can help, I can use all sorts of colours and textures.

It's modern, fun, and still Christmas-y.

In vaguely related news, I refuse to put icicles out the front. I also will not be using traditional Christmas lights.

I'm thinking dragonfly shaped outdoor lights along the verandah - it has some lovely fret work that will look stunning with lights draped from it.

A rant

I don't often do these, but I recently read something that started to get me thinking, and so, I decided I'd put my opinion out there

See, it happens, I'm a James Bond fan. Like, a serious one.

I can name Villains, counterintelligence, agents, gadgets, cars, etc, from just about every movie.

I can even name the movie by a random quote.

So, I appreciate it for what it is.

Pure marketing brilliance.

In fact, I can tell you now, were I the marketing genius behind the latest watch/wallet/phone/car/boat/suit, I would want it in the next James Bond movie.

Anyways, I recently read a rant from a blogger who said she enjoyed Bond movies, except for the over-the-top product placement.

Now, my question for all of the other Bond fans is, would you know what an Austin DB-9 is, except for Bond? What about an MG-A?

No?

What about a Rolex? Armani suit?

Okay. The last two are givens. But still. You (obviously) get my point.

For marketing execs, product placement isn't just something. In the right movie, with the right person, it is everything.

I generally don't do them unless something really OMG! comes up, and this is it.

I drink a lot of coffee. Read several mugs worth of bitter, dark coffee a day (yeah, I drink it with milk, but I can't drink plain black coffee as a rule).

Anyways, as I was walking through the supermarket yesterday, I came across Zolito Coffee, in pop up cup sized filters. (I'd give you a link on their site, but a) I don't read or speak Thai, and b) it doesn't seem to be listed)

Anyways, here's the point (and yes, there is one). It makes a nice cup, and at $3.60 for a pack of 6, it's not bad....

Now to see if I can work out how to make my own cup filters...

My first aid kit

I have this old, square tin box. It's around 30 cm by 30 cm, around 7 inches the other way.

I use it as my first aid kit.

Only thing is, it's old. And when I say old, I mean old. As in, my understanding is that its the same box that Grandfather used to use to take all the tapes, bandages, etc, to matches when he was a soccer coach. And that was when Mum was a kid.

So, it's looking kinda worse for wear. It isn't exactly attractive in the first place, mind, but the powdered paint finish is coming off, and it's starting to rust.

So, I've set myself a challenge.

I'm going to paint it. I now just need to work out colours (the traditional white with a red cross, or vice versa, or should I go something different?).

I will be using rust proof paint on it, though. That (hopefully) will make a vague difference.

Colour changing walls and floors

I was Stumbling again (I seem to do that a lot, don't I?)

This time, I'm waiting for my sister, Bast to let me know when she's had the babies - she was going in for a Caesarean at 930 this morning, Sydney (Brisbane) time.

Anyways, I came across these - Temperature sensitive glass tiles.

I'm imagining them as a splashback in a kitchen, or tiles that line a shower recess (Like this)

They're priced at about $15 (US) per standard size 4" x 4" x 3/8" tile - a square foot will run you about $150 (US).

I've finally fixed the Apronista button, and I've just added the Gussy button.

Apronista is full of apron fun - and as a retro design lover, that appeals to me on so many levels.

Gussy, meanwhile, makes bags. Lovely, ruffled bags.

Retro Rooms

So, I'm always looking for ideas. And not just ideas, but Ideas.

And if you've had your head buried in the sand, you probably wouldn't realise that I love retro fashions and clothes - specifically 1950s style stuff.

So, imagine my delight when I came across Retro Rooms. I'm sure that these themes could be changed slightly to fit in with personal preferences.

My friend Viv, over at ish & chi, has themed her son's nursery - Viv loves circuses, you see.

I know my two younger girls would love a fairy theme (not Disney ones though, thanks *bleh*), my older girl would love a Harry Potter theme - My son, though... *sigh* he's a strange one, so big, bold, solid colours would be best for him.

I wear glasses. I also happen to like my glasses. For me, they're a statement I don't make with my clothes (I dress conservatively) or my hair (also conservative - my few forays into bright, funky, cool colours have backfired, like the time my hair went bright pink, or the time my hair went OMG! burnt orange).

So, several years back, a friend told me about Zenni Optical.

Anyways, just thought I'd show you my "every day" specs, and my going out specs (I have them in a pale lilac colour).

Anyways, I chipped the lense of my good specs, so at some point, I'm going to need to get new ones. And yanno what? At the prices on Zenni, I can afford to get a few pairs. And maybe even some tinted and UV protected ones to wear as sunglasses.

I love heels. It isn't because I'm short, because at 167 cm (5'7), I'm not.

I know I'm not tall either, though.

But, I like wearing heels.

So, today, on my "run in to Bankstown to get some food to cook for dinner for tonight" expedition, I wore my 3rd favourite shoes - my favourites being a fab pair of black and cream lace up 4 inch heels, and my second favourites are t-bar brogues, with a 2 inch heel.

Only thing is, but the time I got home (around 3 minutes ago), I couldn't unlace my 5 inch ankle boot brogues quick enough. My feet have decided I can no longer wear OMG-look-how-high-that-heel-is shoes.

*sigh*

And to think that I rarely wore heels at all, until we moved back to Sydney...

I have these listed on Etsy now. They're listed as samples, just to show what I can do.

They can be easily customised by theme (formal, seasonal, colour scheme, etc).

I also will soon be doing some "training" placemats - slightly smaller, with outlines for cutlery and a plate/dish. These will be marketed towards people with little kids, or just big kids themselves.

I considered ordering some cupcake designs, and other coordinating fabrics, plus some lovely materials I could see me making some oilcloth aprons from. Amongst all of it, I found some trims for my matching oven mitts (to go with the aprons).

I was stumbling last night, and came across The Teastick, a single serve way to get a lovely cup of tea.

This for me is wonderful in a few different ways.

I love tea. And it's because it's tea that I've posted it here
I love sleek looking designs that combine form and function so well, which is why it is also posted on The Balloon Whisk and Pyrex Dish
I could see me using it, not just in a cup (I always drink my tea in a cup, with matching saucer), but I can also see my mother using it, for her plain, bland, boring black tea, in her bone china mug with a design of otters chasing butterflies

In a continual quest to find What It Is I Want To Do With My Life, I'm forced to concede that working for Someone Else just doesn't work for me.
So, I'm gonna be starting up my own dressmaking business. I have the ideas, the sewing machine, a few designs, I just need someone local to me that can help get ideas from in head, onto paper, and then into actuality.
I'm gonna start small. A stall at the markets once a month. Move on from there.
It'll be rockabilly, psychobilly, and pinup style clothes, for men and women.
You never know. I might just make Real Money.

These dresses have caught my eye.

This first one (on the left) is the Crystal dress (found here.)
I love that this one is nice enough to wear to a wedding, but I am also likely to wear it again (for work, perhaps?).
It's also the first non-black dress that I found.

This is always good feeling.
This blog will be about things that have caught my eye, and at the moment, that's dresses, shoes and back, and hair cuts, colours and styles.
See, I'm going to my exes wedding in September, so that's what I'm looking at.
There'll possibly be other things I've noticed, too, so keep your eyes peeled.
Eventually, I'll also be using this for when I start making my own dresses, so watch out for that, too.
